4 Things That May Affect the Results of Your Job Interviews

4 Things That May Affect the Results of Your Job Interviews 4 Things That May Affect the Results of Your Job Interviews You’ve been applying for jobs for a while now. You’ve perfected your resume. You’ve written a great cover letter. You have done some networking on LinkedIn. All your efforts have proved successful as you finally landed a few interviews. Whether you are a new job seeker or a veteran to the job search, interviews can be a scary thing. While you may know the questions to prepare for, there are some other things you should consider when going into a job interview. 4. Timing The time of your job interview and when you arrive could be affecting your job search more than you realized. While I’m sure you know not to be late to an interview, arriving too early can also be affecting your interview results. There is a balance between arriving early to show punctuality and arriving too early. Arriving 15-30 minutes can make you appear too anxious, and it can inconvenience your interviewer. It's best to arrive five to ten minutes early. Another time factor affecting your job search is when you schedule your interview. You want to avoid scheduling your interview too late in the day when your interviewer could be tired and have their mind distracted by other priorities. According to Glassdoor, the best time to schedule an interview is at 10:30 AM, when people are at their most productive. 3. Lack of knowledge about the company With the all the information available online, coming into an interview without researching the company is unacceptable. Not knowing the company can make you seem uninterested in the position and the company. It can even come across as insulting. Before your interview, look up the company online. Browse their website and the services they offer. Get a sense of the company’s culture to see how where you fit and what you can bring to the table. If you can, find information on the team you are interviewing for and write down questions relating to your research. Be prepared to give information about what the company does and what you can bring to the team. 2. Oversharing Being personable and friendly are great tips for an interview, but it’s important to understand the line between friendly and too friendly. Sharing too much personal information when asked to tell about yourself can have adverse effects on your interview. Revealing too much personal information in an interview can come off unprofessional to the interviewer. Keep your answer concise and limited to your professional accomplishments. Having a few stories that show off your personality and relate to your work is a good plan for the interview. If you find yourself getting off track, take a breath and bring the subject back to the position at hand. 1. Asking too much about the perks too soon Bringing up salary and benefits in an interview is a tricky situation that can have disastrous effects on the outcome. It’s important to know the right time to bring up salary and benefits in an interview. Asking too much too soon can seem like you are only interested in the benefits of the position. It is best to wait for the interviewer to give information on salary and benefits. If you have questions about the salary or benefits, do some research on the company beforehand to get an idea. Researching the salary estimates beforehand will also help prepare if the interviewer asks about your expectations.

How watching horrors movies can actually relax you

How watching horrors movies can actually relax you How watching horrors movies can actually relax you To calm our nerves after a long day, some of us turn on a television show to make us laugh. But as performer Lady Gaga recently pointed out, for some of us, the most calming activity we can do is watch a horror movie designed to frighten us. In a video with Vogue, she shared that she watches horror movies to relax. This sounds counterintuitive to me, a lifelong scaredy cat. When I recently watched the 1978 film “Halloween,” even the scenes where Jamie Lee Curtis is not actively hiding from a deranged man had my heart racing. I finished the movie feeling unsettled and wanting to check the rooms in my apartment for strangers. But for people like Lady Gaga, these films can be soothing.   Here’s the psychology behind why:How horror on screens can relax usWhen you are dealing with anxiety, it helps to remember that there are worlds outside of your own anxious brain, even if these worlds are fictional.Psychologists say horror films can provide a perspective into another world where an xiety happens under known formats. “For some anxious people, escaping into a compelling story is a way to better manage real-life anxiety. Whether they use the content as a distraction or as a way to gain ideas about mastery, these viewers purposefully seek out anxiety-provoking content,” Dr. Janet Scarborough Civitelli, who holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, said. Horror films filled with terrifying monsters can provide a structured environment for viewers to confront personal fears. For horror fans, it can also be a way to release pent-up feelings in a controlled environment.  In one Reddit thread on the subject, a horror film fan shared that it can be a way to put their own problems in perspective. “There is something relaxing about forgetting your own daily fears and being fully emerged in other people’s fears and horrors,” the redditor wrote. “Seeing someone stalked by a psycho killer makes your daily fears seem doable. It also is exhausting for your body to be so heightened and on edge for a long time so it wouldn’t surprise me that you would be exhausted afterwords.”Mathias Clasen, a researcher who has studied the biological effects of horror films, told Broadly that we can find pleasure in knowing that a movie’s anxiety is controllable. “Exposure to horror films can be gratifying when the negative emotions caused by the film are manageable,” Clasen explained. “Moreover, there’s psychological distance when we watch a horror film. We know it’s not real- or at least, some parts of our brain know it isn’t real.”Your day may have been awful, but hey, at least, you are not running for your life from a bloodthirsty monster.   Once you see someone living out a worst-case scenario, it can help you better understand how you can survive through your own.

How to Get Help From a Career Counselor

How to Get Help From a Career Counselor How to Get Help From a Career Counselor Throughout our careers, we encounter many situations when we could benefit from unbiased advice. We may be in the process of choosing a career, deciding whether or not we should change careers or jobs, re-entering the workforce, job hunting, or recovering from a job loss. We come to the realization that this is an overwhelming process and we want and need some help. A Rose by Any Other Name Career counselor, career development facilitator, career coach, job coach, and vocational counselor are just a few of the names you might come across as you look for someone to help you with your career. It can get very confusing if you arent an informed consumer. Lets begin by saying there are some unscrupulous individuals out there who are misrepresenting themselves. You may see advertisements from those who guarantee you a higher paying job, a more fulfilling career, and ultimately a better life. In reality, no one can guarantee you any of those things. A good career development professional can help you explore career options, can inform you of labor market trends, and can assess your skills, interests, and work-related values. A career development professional can help you sharpen your job search skills, and can help you learn how to move up the corporate ladder. While credentials are not the only thing you should look at, they are a good starting point when you are choosing someone to advise you about your career. Just as you would never consider seeing a doctor who does not have a medical degree, you should never pay someone for career advice unless they have professional credentials. Once you have determined that the person from whom you are seeking advice has the proper credentials, you must then find out if he or she is right for you. Is this individual knowledgeable about your particular field, and do you feel comfortable talking to him or her? Is this person promising only what he or she can deliver? A career development professional cant guarantee you success. No one can. A brief interview with the career development professional is well worth your time and should be worth theirs. Career Counselors Many career counselors are members of the National Career Development Association. The NCDA offers special membership categories to recognize those who have reached certain professional levels of achievement. Master Career Counselors, for example, hold masters degrees in counseling or related fields. NCDA members are listed on that organizations Web site: www.ncda.org. Career counselors may have local licenses from state boards of licensure. Career Development Facilitators There are many people who provide career guidance but are not professional career counselors. This fact was recognized by several professional groups who banded together to develop the Global Career Development Facilitator (or GCDF) credential, which provides standards, training specifications and credentialing for those who provide these services.

I am Thankful for this Federal Job

I am Thankful for this Federal Job I am Thankful for this Federal Job I am Thankful for this Federal Job HIRED AND STARTING WORK NOV. 24, 2017 IN THE USA By Kathryn Troutman, Author, Federal Resume Guidebook 6th and Jobseeker Guide, 8th November 22, 2017 11/14/2017 Thank you for your great writing and support for my federal resume building. I am starting my new job with a different agency on Monday and I am very excited. I feel this is the caliber of job that I deserve and need to be in. You and your staff helped me get there. I was selected for Construction Analyst for HUD. I did not expect to get the 13 and was very pleased after the result. Being stuck in Afghanistan on deployment and having the time zone difference create more complications in communication, You and your staff did a phenomenal job in helping me pursue the job I deserve. Sure its my opinion, but when I know in my heart and soul I know what I know and just being able to tell some stranger that is very difficult in any way shape or form. You allowed me on paper to explain myself the way it needed to be. I think this job is my destiny and I think my new supervisors feel the same way as they read my resume. I walked out of Afghanistan with a cache of awards and medals that only I and the people I worked with know about. My existing command will never know this information but it will need to be explained to any new jobs I seek and I will use you again to help assist me in explaining this. I dont think Ill need you again as I think Ive found the job for me but if I do your the first person I call. If you read my original resume that I wrote, I had my Marine career in there. Its extremely difficult to explain or convert combat and weapons experience into real life. The Marine Corps made me who I am today. Youll never explain that in words. My construction experience was hard for me to explain as well. I have done a lot. Veterans like myself thought I could walk right in to a GOV job. And with my experience it took a year to get in the door. Of course I see a lot of the buddy system in the GOV but its a small percentage of the jobs available. The right resume might of rectified my situation. Thank you Ladies Semper FI PS Use any or all of our communications for the validity of your service!!! Kathryn, I just did my last day yesterday at the base and it was sadfor about 1 minute. Im throwing everything I have at this job because I think I found the right fit.
